Bad as they are, the corroding Alaskan oil pipelines are far from the worst in America, though you might never know it from the recent headlines. I discovered this recently in the media aftermath of the pipeline shutdown.

As president and chief executive officer of a company that repairs more oil, water and sewer pipes than any other company around the world, I found myself talking to print and electronic reporters from across the country who wanted to know the inside story of the Alaskan pipes.

Some were just a tad disappointed when I reminded them the pipeline was shut down because of potential, not actual problems and would probably be back in service within a few months. And crude oil prices were already headed back down.

The oil pipes received a lot of attention. But remember: No one died. No one got sick. No pristine land was despoiled. It will cost us some money.

But only a few people are talking about the broken pipes really do hurt our environment, get people sick, cause deaths and cost us even more money than oil pipeline shutdowns. Those are sewer pipes, of course. Even the worst Alaskan oil pipe is in better shape than the average city sewer pipe.

I''ve seen enough of both to know this: Crude oil is much cleaner and less toxic than sewage. And oil spills are much less common. Yet oil gets all the ink, while sewage escapes scrutiny.

Over the last several months, more than a dozen places in this country alone have had the worst sewer spills in decades, if not their history. Billions have been spent for clean-up, remediation and health-care costs because of these spills and for one reason: sewer pipes that are old, eroded, broken, even corroded to the point of nonexistence. There are almost 1 million miles of them in America alone.

Bad sewer pipes are a problem we can no longer ignore. And it will only get worse for these two simple reasons: Most sewer pipes were built 60 years ago and only intended to last 50 years. Not enough people pay attention until they break. Then it is too late.

A few months from now the oil will flow again in Alaska. The spill will be largely forgotten. Meanwhile, sewer pipes across the country are on the brink of catastrophic ― even fatal ― collapse. Not in the wilds of Alaska but right below your feet right now, right next to a source of drinking water, a playground, a lake or a beach near you.

독자가 최근 신문들의 머리기사 제목을 보고는 결코 알 수 없었을지 모르나, 부식된 알래스카 송유관들이 나쁘기는 하지만 미국에서 최악의 사태와는 거리가 멀다. 나는 송유관 폐쇄의 여파 속에서 언론을 통해 최근 이러한 사실을 발견했다.

전세계의 어느 회사보다 더 많은 송유관과 상·하수도관을 수리하는 회사의 사장 겸 경영최고책임자로서 나는 알래스카 송유관의 내막 이야기를 알고자 하는 전국의 인쇄매체와 전자매체 기자들에게 사실을 말해 주게 되었다.

송유관이 폐쇄된 것은 실제 문제들 때문이 아니라 잠재적인 문제들 때문이며, 몇 달 안에 재가동될 가능성이 있다고 내가 일깨워 주었을 때 일부 기자들은 다소 실망했다. 그리고 원유 가격은 이미 다시 내려가고 있다.

알래스카 송유관은 많은 관심을 끌었다. 그러나 다음과 같은 사실을 기억하자. 죽은 사람이 없다. 병에 걸린 사람이 없다. 원시의 땅이 훼손되지 않았다. 이번 사건으로 우리는 상당한 비용을 부담하게 되었다.

그러나 파손된 관들이 실제로 우리의 환경을 손상시키고 질병을 일으키며, 사망자를 발생시키고 송유관 폐쇄보다 더 많은 비용을 부담시킨다는 사실에 관해 이야기하는 사람은 극소수다. 그러한 관들은 말할 것도 없이 하수관이다. 상태가 최악인 알래스카의 송유관들조차도 미국 도시의 평균적인 하수관들보다는 상태가 양호하다.

나는 양쪽을 충분히 보아서 다음과 같은 사실을 안다. 원유는 하수보다 훨씬 더 청정하며 독성이 적다. 그리고 원유 누출은 흔하지 않다. 하수는 면밀한 조사 대상이 되지 않는 반면 원유는 언론의 이목을 독차지한다.

지난 몇 달 동안 미국 한 나라에서만 10곳 이상의 지역에서, 역사상 최악은 아닐지라도 지난 수십년래 최악의 하수 누출 사고가 발생했다. 이런 하수 누출 및 한 가지 이유로 인해 청소·수리와 보건의료 비용으로 수십억달러가 지출되고 있다. 그 원인이란 낡고 부식되어 파손되고 심지어 소실 단계까지 부식된 하수관들이다. 미국 한 나라에만 근 160만 ㎞의 부식 하수관이 있다.

불량 하수관들은 우리가 더 이상 외면할 수 없는 문제다. 그리고 다음과 같은 이유로 문제가 더욱 악화될 뿐일 것이다. 대부분의 하수관은 60년 전에 설치되었으며 당초 설계된 내구연한은 50년이다. 하수관이 파손되기 전까지는 충분히 많은 사람들이 주의를 기울이지 않는다. 파손된 뒤에는 이미 때가 늦다.

지금부터 몇 달이 지나면 알래스카에서는 원유가 다시 송유관 속을 흐를 것이다. 원유 누출은 대부분 잊혀질 것이다. 그러나 전국의 하수관들은 재앙적인 붕괴, 심지어 치명적인 붕괴 직전에 놓여 있다. 알래스카의 황무지에서 재앙이 일어나는 것이 아니라 지금 우리의 발아래서 일어날 수 있다. 식수원과 놀이터, 당신 집 부근의 호수 및 해변 바로 옆에서 일어날 수 있다.
